Title: Sweet Gen

Author: Will_conqueror1
Rating: FRT
Pairing: Giles/OFC
Summary: Oz triggers a memory from Giles’ past, and of a woman he once thought he’d spend his life with.
Timeline: Season 4 “The Harsh Light of Day”, when Oz is looking through Giles’ record collection.
Word Count: 581
Author’s Note: This takes place in my Chronicles of Ripper series, which I’ve often said I try very hard to keep canon compliant. However, you don’t need to read the rest of the series for this short story to make sense.
Author's Note 2: I was very excited about this prompt because The Velvet Underground is one of my favorite bands and I love that he has Loaded in his collection. The song this fic was inspired by is "Sweet Jane" by The Velvet Underground. Click here for a listen.

Out of curiosity, is anyone interested in a Kindle Paperwhite. It's the previous edition, so it's not the latest one, but it still works perfectly fine. Pretty much the only time that I use it nowadays is when I'm traveling via plane, which I don't see happening any time soon since I don't plan on going back to Tennessee for the holidays this year. So since my checking account is still somewhat lighter than I'd like, I thought that I'd at least see if anyone might want one.

I also still have quite a few things available in the virtual garage sale post that I put up several weeks ago. And I'm very much willing to haggle when it comes to listed prices, if you're interested in anything.

(Oh, and for those of you who donated to my Ko-fi page and requested fic, it's coming! The last few weeks have been absolutely hell, which deserves its own post, but things are calming down and I actually have time to breathe again.)

This week's prompt is inspired by a certain scene during Season 4's "The Harsh Light of Day" as seen below...

That's right! This week's prompt is:
The Velvet Underground

Just like last week, we have addition sub-prompts for you, if you are interested. These are all song tracks from Loaded, the specific album tha Oz was holding up. They are:
Who Loves the Sun
Head Held High
I Found a Reason

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. These are merely to get you inspired and get you writing. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please. Just as long as Giles is in the mix somewhere, of course!

As for another bit of housekeeping, as those of you on Tumblr might already know, Otter and I have started a Giles-dedicated blog, which you can find here. It's a good place to get some visual inspiration. To help with the writing we created a few tags for posts associated with the current theme. Here's the one for the Giles's Record Collection theme and this is the one for last week's Cream and/or Clapton prompt and this is the one for the Velvet Underground.

Happy writing and see you next week!

Title: The Holiday Punch

Author:

[personal profile] littleotter73

Characters: Giles, Buffy

Rating: FRC

Setting: After Giles returns in Bring on the Night in season 7

Word Count: 100
Prompt: Strange Brew

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss' sandbox.

“Erm, Buffy?” Giles interrupted tentatively as she spoke with the new potentials. “I, uh, don’t mean to alarm you, but there’s a… strange brew… fogging up the buffet table,” he informed her as he pointed to the pale green concoction in the crystal punch bowl. “You did tell Anya this was a Christmas party, yes?”

Buffy rolled her eyes. “You’ve lived in the good ol’ USA for how long and have never had lime sherbet punch?”

She ladled him a cup of the green potion and he recoiled in horror, shaking his head.

“I’ll, uh, pass on the swamp water.”

See icon.

Anyway, so Hurricane Irma happened. I spent several days at my friends' house, being nervous (before the storm) and exhausted (after the storm). The power went out Sunday night as the winds began to howl overhead. Luckily Monday, after the storm had passed, was breezy and relatively nice even without power, and when I went home Tuesday morning, my power was restored.

But that's luck.

I live in a Tree City, and everywhere old oaks lie cracked in yards or near roadways. The neighbors behind me never do treework at all despite a yard full of aged water oaks, and as in Matthew last year, half of one of the oaks fell on my back fence. La la la.

No, seriously, la la la, because my neighbor across the street (who also doesn't have tree work done) had HER giant oak snap off near the roots, and it rests partially on her house. She is staying with church friends, possibly for a long time.

Master Danger and I are back to almost normal, except for the hum of generators nearby and roads unexpectedly closed by trees and a few local shops still not blessed with power. My current project is to buy a new mattress, because after last week's hotel stays and the weekend's stay at my friends', the inadequacy of my own bed is making itself felt. OUCH.

May you only have the best of breezes this week!

Hello, everyone! First, I would like to say thank you to [personal profile] littleotter73 for the lovely introduction and a great big thank you of my own to [personal profile] il_mio_capitano for her dedication to the community and providing such a welcoming environment for "newbies to the fandom". May Otter and I uphold your shinning legacy!

So, as you hopefully know, this month's theme is Giles's Record Collection. You are free to take that wherever the Muse leads you, but if she's gone silent on you, we'll offer a weekly set of prompts. This week's is:

CREAM and/or ERIC CLAPTON

Our own[personal profile] littleotter73 has created some lovely fanart as a supplement. (I would also like to express my full appreciation for her mad art skills!)

We know from canon that Giles has at least one Cream album in his collection. It stands to reason he'd have some Clapton too. These records don't have to appear in your fic directly. They can just be the inspiration. If that's not enough to get you going, we offer additional prompts of Cream and Eric Clapton song titles:

Strange Brew
My Father's Eyes
It's in the Way That You Use It

As Cap would say, drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please. Just as long as Giles is in the mix somewhere, of course!

Happy writing and see you next week!

Hi All,

I would like to announce that we have a change in moderators here at Giles Shorts. Due to her real life responsibilities, [personal profile] il_mio_capitano  has decided to step down from her duties as mod. I'd like to thank her for her hard work and dedication over the last several years. Giles Shorts was born from a private comm we hid out in to practice our drabble skills. At her urging, we decided to go public and she took the helm to inspire short fic centered around our favourite Watcher. Thank you, my Captain, for everything.

On a happier note, I am excited to welcome [personal profile] quaggy as my new partner in crime. Though she has been writing fic for over ten years, she is a relative newcomer to the BtVS fandom and has been a regular here at Shorts for over a year. In fact, her first BtVS post ever was in Giles Shorts! And... she is bringing with her some awesome ideas for new themes and prompts. I am totally jazzed, you guys!

So without further ado, from quaggy's genius mind, our September theme is: Giles' Record Collection

Tomorrow there will be a new weekly prompt to help everyone out with the theme. So keep your eyes out for that.

Again, many thanks to il_mio_capitano and welcome, quaggy!

-otter

Seriously?

Question: has anyone else had an issue with the USPS returning packages that they've mailed, claiming that the address is incorrect when it's not?

I've had this happen multiple times, usually when I'm mailing out several packages at the same time. It doesn't happen regularly, by any means, but it happens enough that it's starting to get more than a little annoying. And it just happened again, because a package that I mailed out from my last virtual garage sale post was returned to me yesterday.

Could it have to do with the something that my local post office is doing, when they're inputting information for the various barcodes and such that are then put on the package? That's the only thing I can think of to explain why it's happened several times, but I'm not entirely certain how exactly scanning packages works with the USPS.
