I'm on a posting group that just finished having a very emotional discussion about plagiarism in vidding. Specifically taking chunks of a vid (scenes, transitions, speeds) and using them as their own, without permission.

The argument is a good one, I totally agree with it. What upsets me is the tone the discussion took. I came away from it preparing to defend all the work I had done on my own vids. Wondering if, the next time I post something, someone's going to sit down and go through it scene by scene and say "here at 1:30 is the same transition and clip as so-and-so's vid".

Probably won't happen, but that's the feeling I got. And like I said to someone else, I wouldn't be surprised if it stopped people from vidding and/or posting there.

Thing is, though...

...that you get that in any creative field. You've really got to push past it and realize that you're always going to get influences from others who do whatever it is you're doing, and occasionally parts of your work is going to look similar. It can paralyze you if you let it, but you shouldn't.

(Hey, am I your first comment? Go me!)

first comment from someone I know (go you!)

Totally understand that there are influences, especially subconscious ones. And the more popular a fandom becomes the more things are going to be similar. Example, Look at how many post-Grave stories are floating around. It's getting very hard to find one that's completely unique.

Only way to get around it is to live in a vacuum, or be the first in a new fandom.

...When does Firefly premiere?
